About Our Tanzania Kifaru Estate — Washed Single Origin
Kifaru Estate sits atop the fertile ridge of the Ngorongoro crater in Northern Tanzania, with a long history of growing high grade Arabica at high altitude. The estate is owned by a family from Southern Denmark and managed with a hands-on approach together with a skilled local team. Across its 500 hectares — irrigated by a modern drip line system to ensure efficient water usage — 150 hectares are planted with Bourbon and 50 hectares have recently been planted with Gesha, Castillo and other varieties, with the remaining 300 hectares given over to grasslands for cattle and wildlife pockets that border the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A local trust provides education and healthcare for employees of the estate. This washed lot uses the Bourbon variety that Kifaru Estate is now famous for.
Ngorongoro, Tanzania — Grown on the Rim of the Crater
Kifaru Estate sits atop the fertile ridge of the Ngorongoro crater in Northern Tanzania, at 1800 Masl. It is a landscape better known for its wildlife than its coffee, but the altitude, volcanic soils and cool highland air make it exceptional growing country — and the farm has a long history of producing high grade Arabica here.
The estate is owned by a family from Southern Denmark and run with a hands-on approach alongside a skilled local team. It covers 500 hectares in total, irrigated by a modern drip line system to keep water use efficient. Only 200 of those hectares are under coffee: 150 planted with Bourbon and 50 more recently planted with Gesha, Castillo and other varieties. The remaining 300 hectares are left as grassland for cattle and as wildlife pockets bordering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A local trust funds education and healthcare for the estate's employees and their families.
This lot is made entirely from Bourbon, the variety Kifaru Estate has become known for. The cherries are processed using the washed method, which removes all the fruit before drying and gives a clean, bright cup — here showing lemon zest, golden honey, orange and stone fruit.
