Sourced with Purpose — The Mata Atlântica Project

This lot comes from our green coffee sourcing partner Ocafi Coffee, sourced from 20 smallholder farms in the Rio Pardo region. Ocafi and its associated farms are part of the Mata Atlântica project, which uses profits from every sack of Monteiro Lobato sold to plant native trees across the local Fazendas — species including Embaúba, Guapuruvu, Paineira and Amora that help maintain biodiversity and improve crop yield. The coffee is processed naturally: cherries are dried for 12 days on patios, transferred to mechanical dryers for 10 hours, then moved to silos for 15 days until they reach optimum moisture for export.

Rio Pardo, Brazil — Where Coffee Grows the Forest Back

The Rio Pardo region sits within the Atlantic Forest biome of southern Brazil — one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems and one of the most threatened. The farms that produce the Monteiro Lobato lot sit within what remains of this ancient forest, at altitudes of 900 to 1,000 metres above sea level.

Through the Mata Atlântica project, every sack of Monteiro Lobato sold generates funds to plant native trees across the local Fazendas. These trees support local wildlife, improve soil health and create the shade conditions that benefit the coffee plants themselves. It's a model where the economics of specialty coffee directly fund the recovery of one of Brazil's most important ecosystems.

The 20 smallholder farms grow the Catuai and Bourbon varietals — classic Brazilian genetics that produce the milk chocolate, biscuit and hazelnut character this lot is known for. The natural process, where cherries dry whole on patios and in silos for weeks, concentrates the fruit sugars and gives the cup its signature sweetness and dried fruit depth.
