Meet Dorothy & Penny
The two vintage Probat roasters behind every cup
We didn’t buy new machines. We found machines worth saving.
Dorothy and Penny are our two vintage 1950s Probat drum roasters. Every single bag of coffee we’ve ever roasted has gone through one of them. They’re not just equipment — they’re the heart of what we do.
Dorothy
Dorothy is a Probat UG22, built in the 1950s. She was the first roaster we ever bought — and she set the standard for everything that followed.
When we got her, she needed serious work. We fitted a new drum, a new face plate, and a new motor system. The burner and loader were rebuilt by Brian Hojamr in Germany — one of the world’s foremost specialists in vintage Probat restoration. Every element was treated as worth saving, not replacing.
She’s been roasting coffee in Devon ever since.
Penny
Penny is a Probat LG12, also from the 1950s. She came to us from a street in Berlin — found before restoration, with all the character of a machine that had been through a lot.
Brian Hojamr worked on Penny too, handling part of her restoration. We also got our hands dirty ourselves. Between us, we gave her a second life.
She roasts alongside Dorothy every week. Between them, they handle every single bag.
