Why We Chose Recyclable Over Compostable Hint: It’s Better for the Beans!

At the Coffee Factory, we’re a bit obsessive about two things: the planet and the perfect cup.
For a long time, we—like many of you—thought compostable packaging was the "holy grail." It sounds perfect, right? Put it in the bin, and it disappears. But as we dug deeper into the science of UK waste and the physics of coffee freshness, we realized the truth is much more complicated.
Here is why we’ve moved to high-quality, recyclable packaging that you can drop off at your local supermarket.
1. Freshness is Our Philosophy
We are a roast-to-order roastery. This means we don’t have bags sitting on shelves for months. However, once that coffee leaves our door, it needs a serious bodyguard.
Compostable materials are often "breathable" by design, which is the enemy of coffee. Oxygen and moisture sneak in, and those delicate chocolate and fruit notes you love start to fade. Our recyclable flexible plastic provides a superior oxygen barrier. It locks the freshness in, ensuring that when your letterbox-friendly delivery hits your mat, it smells as good as the moment it left our roaster.
2. The "Compostable" Contamination Trap
Here’s the bit that surprised us: most UK food waste is processed using Anaerobic Digestion (AD). These systems are amazing at turning food scraps into energy, but they cannot process compostable packaging.
When compostable bags end up in food waste bins, they are treated as contaminants. Because they don’t break down in an oxygen-free environment, they are often filtered out and sent straight to landfill or incineration anyway. By choosing a clear "Recycle at Supermarket" path, we ensure our bags actually stay in a circular loop rather than clogging up the food waste system.
3. Making Recycling Simple
We want to make being eco-friendly as easy as your morning brew. You can now take our empty bags to over 4,000 UK supermarkets—including Tesco, Co-op, and Sainsbury’s—where they are collected specifically for soft-plastic recycling. It’s a proven, transparent system that works right now.
The Bottom Line
We chose this path because it’s the most honest one. It keeps your coffee fresher for longer and ensures our packaging doesn't end up as a "hidden" contaminant in our local waste streams.
Better for the beans, better for the planet.
