How We Remove the Caffeine

Most commercial decaf is processed using synthetic chemical solvents that strip caffeine quickly but can affect flavour and leave trace residues. We use three different methods — chosen depending on the coffee — all of which are clean, natural alternatives.

The water process uses pure water and activated carbon filters to remove caffeine while leaving flavour compounds intact. The CO2 process uses pressurised carbon dioxide to selectively extract caffeine molecules with exceptional precision, preserving the most delicate flavour characteristics. The sugar cane process uses ethyl acetate derived from fermenting sugar cane — a naturally occurring compound found in fruit — which bonds with caffeine and draws it out of the bean.

Each method suits different coffees and produces slightly different results in the cup. What they share is the same principle: no synthetic chemicals, no shortcuts, and a genuine commitment to making decaf worth drinking.

What decaffeination process is used?

We use the Swiss Water process or Mountain Water process depending on the current selection — both are chemical-free methods that remove caffeine using water, preserving the original flavour compounds of the bean.

Does decaf coffee from Coffee Factory taste as good as regular coffee?

Yes. Our decaf coffees are specialty grade, sourced and roasted with the same care as our regular range. The water-based decaffeination process is chosen specifically to retain flavour, so you get a full-bodied, tasty cup without the caffeine.

What brew methods work with this decaf subscription?

All standard brew methods — espresso, filter, French press, AeroPress, and stovetop. Grind type can be selected at checkout to match your equipment.
