About Our Kenya Kamundu — Natural Single Origin

This naturally processed, single varietal SL34 lot is from Kamundu Estate in Kiambu, Kenya. Kiambu county is located just outside Nairobi city, and has a history of coffee production as far back as the early 20th century. Kamundu is a 155ha coffee farm owned and operated by Sasini, a publicly listed company with a majority Kenyan ownership. Sasini places an emphasis on equity and community; they are involved in the provision of living quarters, education, union membership and guaranteed above minimum wage for all their workers. Natural process coffees are rare in Kenya compared to washed coffees. This lot uses quality selected cherries that are dried on traditional raised beds for 6 weeks; a consistent drying method that prevents over fermentation.

Kiambu, Kenya — Where Nairobi Meets the Hills

Kiambu county sits just north of Nairobi, nestled on the southern slopes of the Aberdare Range. Despite its proximity to Kenya's capital city, Kiambu has a long and proud history of coffee cultivation stretching back to the early 20th century. The high altitude, rich red volcanic soils and cool highland climate create ideal conditions for growing exceptional Kenyan arabica.

Kamandu Estate is a 155-hectare farm owned and operated by Sasini, a publicly listed company with majority Kenyan ownership. Sasini is deeply committed to the wellbeing of its workforce, providing living quarters, access to education, union membership and wages above the national minimum for all farm workers. This dedication to people is reflected in the careful attention given to every stage of production.

Kenya is traditionally known for its washed coffees, making naturally processed lots like this one a genuine rarity. Kamandu's SL34 cherries are handpicked at peak ripeness, then dried on traditional raised beds for six weeks. This slow, controlled drying method prevents over-fermentation and allows the fruit's natural sugars to infuse the bean, resulting in the complex berry and chocolate notes in the cup.
