  • LOCATION

    Rulindo District

Located at 1776 metres above sea level in the Rulindo District of Rwanda’s northern province, the Tumba washing station lies just beyond the boundaries of the quaint town of Mukoto. Occupying a mere 1.2 hectares, the station, operational since 2008, houses a year round team of 12 full time staff and roughly 95 seasonal workers during the peak harvest months. Local smallholder farms contribute the cherries; which are then sorted and floated, ensuring only the highest density and quality cherries are selected. The selected cherries are then placed on raised beds for 25 -30 days, being consistently turned to prevent the onset of degradation or mould. Once dried, the cherries are mechanically stripped, before being stored ready for export.
