This fully washed lot comes from smallholder farms in Eastern Uganda, home to the Gisu people on the slopes of Mount Elgon. Bugisu is the name for the high altitude grown cherries that grow in the rich volcanic soil of Mount Elgon. The contributing smallholder farms tend to be small; usually no larger than 2.5 hectares, and coffee is grown alongside other crops such as bananas to increase biodiversity and income for the small traditionally family- run farms. This particular lot is classed as AA; meaning that the cherries that make up this lot are screen size 17 and above, and has a lower than 5% threshold for defects for the crop. Traditional processing methods are used, where the cherries are hand picked and hand pulped, fermented, washed and then dried on raised beds.
