Eusebio Arteaga Coronel is a member of the cooperative Lima Coffees and grows coffee on a 4-hectare farm. Lima Coffees represents about 600 smallholder producers in Cajamarca, and though it’s a young group its ambitious leadership has an intense focus on quality. The cooperative was started by Rony Guerrero, who had previously worked in quality control with one of Peru’s largest exporters. Rony knew from experience that some farms produced coffee of very high quality, but these were often mixed with lower quality coffee to be sold as large commercial lots. He wanted to start a cooperative exclusively for those who produced crops of a high cupping quality. Sorgo Negro is named after the long purple grass which grows on the farm. Perched high above the village of San Ramón and looking out over one of the tributaries of the Cerro Negro river, Eusebio has taken over the running of the farm from his father Xavier, who in turn was taught to cultivate coffee by his father. He remains focused on cleanliness and the constant improvement of his systems. This coffee is grown in shade and cooled by the breeze coming off the river. The coffee is fully washed, and slowly sun dried over the course of 15-20 days on covered, open air platforms that allow for maximum air flow and protection from rain.
